Don has been working hard to prepare the training for this coming Tuesday evening. He has set 2 courses using the permanent markers in Bishops Park to help your Compass and Route Choice techniques.
Although you will be in a park you will still need to use a head torch for these exercises. Please meet up in the SE corner of Bishop’s Park just where the tunnel comes under the road over Putney Bridge which is about 20m SE of the café from 18:30.
As the JK is fast approaching we will be returning to the hills this month for intervals. Bathgate rd will again be the location for getting some strength into the legs and we will meet at the junction with Queensmere rd at 7pm. This is due West of Wimbledon Park and North from the Tennis Club. Please try and wear something bright or light coloured so that you stand out in the fading light.
Next Tuesday we are lucky enough that top SLOW Orienteer Ralph Street will be giving a talk at our Clubnight. Ralph will go over a few tips that will help you not only on the evening’s training (route choice) but also how to improve on your skills to make you a better Orienteer! Please try to get there early so that Ralph can start by 18:35 and be finished by 19:00 giving you time to try out your new found knowledge.
We are again at the Thames Hare & Hounds clubhouse just east of the Robin Hood Roundabout. The entrance is at the south end of the building leading up the stairs to the clubroom.
After a good turnout at the Hills session, keep the New Year momentum going by building on this. We’ll meet at the Bandstand at 19:00 followed by a warm up and then straight into the hard work.
On Tuesday 22nd Jan I have set a few courses on the SW technical area of Wimbledon Common. It wil give Orienteers good practice taking bearing in low visability so will be quite hard in places. You never know, the snow might still be around for added enjoyment. Andy has secured the use of the Thames Hare & Hounds clubhouse for the night with a car park too. Its only a few hundred metres from Friars Avenue (SW) in the memorial clubhouse which is accessed from the Robinhood roundabout on the A3 from 18:30. Don’t forget to bring a compass and headtorch.
For the first time we will be hitting the hills of Wimbledon to gain the leg strength to get us through the JK and British this year. If you did this Tuesdays Street O then you’ll know Wimbledon has a few good ones.
We will meet outside the main entrance (South Side) of the station at 19:00 and then jog to the start where my car will be parked to stash your kit away.
For the last training night of the year we will be going back to Imperial College which hosted a Park O in the summer. We will meet outside the Ethos Sports Center which is next to Princes Gardens from 18:30. There are many transport links including bus and tube. Just bring a compass, head torch, sense of direction and of course your Christmas Spirit.
The last chance before Christmas guilt sets in is next Tuesday. The benifit of intervals will start the next time you toe the start box, technical training can take longer. Knock a few seconds off your time in the forest that will only cost you a few drips of sweat. We’ll meet at the Bandstand at 19:00 for some longer reps this week.
