Walk to start: (allow about 30 mins walking)
In order to use the best areas and to prevent junior courses crossing roads the start is 2 km from the car park. It passes the clothing dump (which is close to the finish) after 1k - please use your own bag. Just prior to the clothing dump competitors will cross a road - please take care and obey marshal's instructions. The road carries fast moving traffic and visibility for both pedestrian and driver is restricted. Please bring a cagoule or appropriate top layer to the event as this may be a condition of starting in the event of bad weather. Do not leave the car park without a whistle.
Start Times:For pre-entry please check for a slip of paper included with final details.
Starts: There will be a clear station for SI cards near the call up clock.
Ensure that you put your card in the unit to clear previous data just before you are called up. Starts will be called at -3 minutes. All courses (including colour Coded whilst stocks last) will use overprinted maps. If colour coded maps run out then master maps will be used. Map boxes will be laid out beyond the start line. It is a normal (whistle start) Start times will NOT be changed.
Competitors who have requested a split start time will only be allocated a first start time. The second competitor can go to the start when able. SLOW helpers and second competitors on split starts will be allocated a start time at the start and will have a punching start. They will start immediately at the time allocated by the start official.
Controls: Each control will have a three digit number. Insert your SI card into the hole in the top of the unit and you MUST wait until you hear the bleep and see the light flash (this takes less than 0.3 seconds). It is competitors responsibility to punch correctly. There will be a practice control at enquiries.

Course Descriptions: special pictorial control description symbols
The symbol is being used for "niche". is a hide.
is a gully; is a small gully. These features are distinct but similar; they are mapped by, respectively, a thick brown line and a brown dotted line. Courses 13 to 15 have written descriptions, the rest are pictorial.
Finish: There will be two control units on the finish line for you to put your SI card into, your time does not stop until you use this finish control. Please slow down as you approach the finish control. The clothing dump, first aid and drinks are in the finish area. There will not be room for any club tents in the finish area. Take care crossing the road on the way back to the assembly area.
ALL COMPETITORS MUST VISIT THE RESULTS / DOWNLOAD TENT IN THE ASSEMBLY AREA AFTER THEIR RUN EVEN IF THEY RETIRE.
Map: The map is 1:15 000 on all courses. This is the JK99 map by Robin Thomas, with some minor revisions in the summer of 2000. The maps will have course information and control descriptions overprinted. Courses 1 to 12 will use IOF pictorial descriptions.
Terrain: Mostly forest, part of the Greensand ridge with some steep slopes and areas of slower going. Recent weather conditions have reduced the ground vegetation making much of the area relatively fast underfoot.
Out of Bounds: Hurtwood Control have stipulated an area of 'out of bounds' - this is marked as an overprint on the map and must be respected. Courses have been planned to avoid the area but some competitors will find themselves in adjacent blocks of forest. Please do not be tempted to stray into this area.
All competitors will cross a road on the way to the start and back from the finish. This will be marshalled - please take care and obey their instructions. Courses 1 - 9 all cross roads (with the longer courses crossing several).
The roads that dissect the area tend to be narrow with many small bends and rises. Although driver visibility is restricted, cars tend to travel relatively fast on the straighter sections of road. It is imperative that no competitor runs along a road at any point - this is for your own safety.
In many places vegetation will obscure visibility for the competitor right up to the roadside - please exercise extreme caution, slow down and when you do cross, go straight across the road. No road crossings are manned, but courses have been designed to allow competitors to cross roads where traffic will generally be slower moving.
OK Nuts Trophy: This event includes the OK Nuts Trophy. This is in memory of Mike Wells-Cole. The winners of each of M21L and W21L will receive a trophy to keep for one year. The best junior (based on minutes/km) will also receive a trophy, in memory of a SLOW member, Margaret Loveless. All L and A class winners will receive a souvenir coaster with their results.
String Course: There will be a free string course. The start/finish for the string course will be about 200m south of the assembly area on the way to the start. Please note that the scout camp, on your right as you walk to the start, is out of bounds to all competitors and their families.
Results: On leaving the results/download tent you will receive your split times. Results will be displayed on the day and posted to this website.
A paper based results booklet will be posted to competitors who have supplied an SAE.
Protests / complaints: If you have a comment, or protest, please discuss it with the Planner, Organiser or Controller before putting something in writing. It is hoped that at least one of these officials will be near the finish for most of the day. If you wish to register an official protest, then you should do so in writing with a £5 fee at the enquiries area in the car park.
Safety: Competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety. You must carry a whistle. You must report to the finish even if you retire.
Courses close at 2.30pm
First Aid First Aid/Safety Officer cover is being provided by Caroline and Colin Pocklington. They will have a first aid tent and a four wheel drive ambulance at the finish. There will also be first aid at enquiries. If you are organising an event please talk to them about the cover that are able to provide.
Cancellation: In the event of severe weather conditions (as per the floods in late October) the land owner of the car park may withdraw permission for the use of the field at only three days notice. Although this is very unlikely SLOW reserves the right to cancel the event at short notice as we do not have an alternative car park. We will attempt to contact one person in each club and post a notice on the web site. SLOW also reserves the right to retain some of the entry cost to defray incurred costs.
