SOUTHERN NIGHT CHAMPIONSHIPS.

HANKLEY COMMON

13 DECEMBER 2003.

Travel directions. The event will be signed off the minor road south of Elstead at Grid Ref SU896406. There will be no signs further away; make sure you can get this far under your own steam.

Parking. This is on hard standing. No parking fee.

Registration/enquiries etc. This is in a hut next to the car park. It includes all the usual stuff e.g. payment of entry fees, hired SI cards, control description sheets, download etc. Also toilets. There is an army unit sharing the hut with us - be nice to them

Entry on the night. You might be lucky, as we’ll have printed a few maps over. Best to contact us beforehand (see officials list) Fees. £8 senior. £4 junior.

Start times. We’ve fitted all of you in between 5.28 and 6.48.

Start. This is 300m from the hut (flat - less than 5 minutes). Call up at -2. It will be a punching start, but as this is a championship please keep to your appointed start time. We intend to keep at least 2 minutes between runners on the same course. Maps will be in boxes beyond the start punch. The start kite will be beyond the boxes.

Finish. This is a punching finish and is in front of the hut. Please do not obscure it from incoming runners who will be approaching from both sides.

Prize-giving. This will be held as soon as we know who has won what, and hopefully well before 8.30. There are permanent trophies for most A/L classes and we hope to retrieve as many of those as possible. Where there is no trophy, the winner will at least be announced in order to receive due recognition. There will be no mementoes and no announcements for B/S winners.

Map. Survey 2002. Reprinted for this event at 1:10000. 5 metre contours.

Terrain and planners notes. Hankley is army land - so don’t touch anything suspicious. There's also random barb wire and the like; we're not going to check for whistles but we think they are a pretty good idea.

The Common is a mix of woodland which is mostly fast, and open which is nearly all heather and can be deep and slow in places. There is little green on the map and the summer vegetation is disappearing by the day.
