ORIENTEERING IN BATTERSEA PARK - SALESIAN COLLEGE - MAY-JUNE 2004

Well done to the students of Salesian College who took part in the recent orienteering competitions in Battersea Park.

SLOW put on orienteering for Year 10 students in Battersea Park on five Thursdays throughout May and June, following two sessions with Year 11s in March.

Most of the students took part in two sessions: the first week was a Score event, with competitors taking the controls in any order and getting as many points as possible within a 30 minute time limit.

The second week, we put on three different courses: A - 3.5k, B - 3.5k (similar to A but very slightly easier), C - 2.4k (shorter and a bit easier than B).

Congratulations in particular to Andrew V who was the only Year 10 student to get all the controls, and score the maximum of 180, on the Score course within the 30 minutes time limit.  Several others also managed to visit all the controls, but lost points for being over the time limit: Joey P, Cristiano, Ricardo, Zak, Vinicio, Daniel L and Matthew.  The penalty was -10 points for every minute late.  Four people missed only one control and scored 170 within the time limit: Mauricio G, Alex G, Rafael M and Emiliano.

On the A and B courses a time under 40 minutes was very good; under 30 minutes was exceptional; so Robert S, Jun G, Jack M, Femi, Francisco V, Gary B, Dino C and Jason R all deserve a mention too.

The students on the whole were keen well-behaved and we enjoyed working with them.  It would be good if we could do more orienteering for these students, as some of them have great potential as orienteers.

Many thanks to Don McKerrow, Sarah Brown, Simon Greenwood (Saxons),  Mike Elliot (Mole Valley) and Julianna Grant (Mole Valley) for giving up their time to help.
