The final street orienteering event of the 07/08 SLOW Winter season will be
held in Lambeth on Tuesday 8th April.
Location – Registration/Start/Finish will
be outside the Duke of Sussex pub on Bayliss Road/end of Coral Street,
250m SE from Waterloo Station (close to Old Vic theatre) – postcode SE1 7AY.
(If it is teeming with rain, we may have to re-locate en masse to the Station
Concourse!) Map link
here
Format – 60-minute score event, with a mass
start at 7.00 pm; latecomers can start individually up to 7.30 pm, or
even later if you ask me nicely (however it gets dark around 8 pm, so you will
be more and more disadvantaged). (Hoping that South West trains work
exceptionally well, as I have to be out of town during the afternoon).
Area – Lambeth is characterised by
open plan housing estates, with an extensive footpath network; often roads and
paths end in dead-ends, all of which (well, 99.9%) will be shown on the
map. You will experience a wide variety of urban architecture, pre-WW2 as
well as modern. Unfortunately the area is also intersected by some major
roads, which will have to be crossed with care. The major railway lines
and their bridges, except where bounding the area, will not be included on the
map (because it gets too congested, as well as removing an obvious linear
feature).
Equipment – A4 paper maps will be bagged
in transparent sleeves, bring your own plastic bag if you want something more
robust. Don’t forget a pen/pencil to write down your results, a watch (unless
you can count with consistency to three-thousand-and-sixty), a compass (if
required), a fluorescent vest/bands (recommended) and possibly a torch as the
light fades.
Changing/Showers – regretfully no changing room
is available, so please come ready to run/participate, at least under your
over-clothes. Bags will be watched throughout your run. Public
facilities are available at Waterloo Station.
Social – at The Duke of Sussex.
The only cooked food available will be Baked Potatoes, with a good range of the
normal toppings, priced from a bargain £2.50. Please let me (cbg @ ukonline.co.uk) know by midday Monday if you
wish to order, so that I can ensure that the landlord has enough sacks of
‘tatties in.
Safety – take care crossing all roads,
but particularly the major ones, for which liberal use of double-width road
symbol has been applied to the map.
To
assist with predicting numbers for map printing, please email cbg @ ukonline.co.uk in advance (by midday Monday) if
coming.
