Race Details

Final Details will be printed and sent out by post about 10 days before the race. However the final details will also appear here as from November 1st. Please note that details may change up to Dec 1st when they will become the final version.

Additional Information

The M21L and W21L courses, as the premier classes, will have an additional challenge given them by planners Mandy Reynard and David Finch. They will be running with a no paths map. The open area in the centre of the common is typical undulating Surrey heathland, the short heather is criss crossed with many paths. Competitors will be forced to read physical features, such as contours and vegetation change more closely than they might perhaps normally. Much thinning has taken place in the forest area in the south-west of the map opening up the area considerably. All courses can expect fast times and therefore longer distances.

Juniors on courses M10 and W10 will have a preview of their overprinted course in the start lane. Parents will be able (briefly) to give youngsters some guidance before they rush out onto the common. The younger junior courses will be sharing courses with the colour coded courses. To help competitive juniors not get frustrated with the possibilities of families clustering around the early controls juniors on the badge course will have their own start block of time, probably a 15 minute block with a clear 5 minutes in front of them. This will be the last badge event using the old (1996) age groups.

There will be entry on the day for Badge Entry, subject to space. There will also be an entry on the day colour coded competition. Courses will be white, yellow, orange and light green. There will be no master maps, as at normal colour coded, but competitors will use the over-printed maps being used on the badge event. There will be a string course for younger children, but no creche.

The race will be signposted from Milford Junction on the A3. This junction is 15 miles south-west of the M25 Junction 10. The A3 between J10 and Milford is a fast three-lane dual carriageway for most of the route. Traffic coming South on the A3 need to be aware of the bridge repairs at the junction of the A3 and the A31 at the start of the Hogsback that may still be underway in December. Try to keep in the left hand lane for the A3. Beware, the traffic signs can be confusing! O-signed from Milford Junction inward traffic will be directed west along the B3001 to Elstead and then south along Thursley Rd. Please do not enter via Thursley as has been the case in the past. The car park is on the left, 2.3 miles south of Elstead. Outward traffic will be directed left out of the car=park and then left into Dye House Rd and out through Thursley to rejoin the A3. Traffic for Portsmouth and the south can turn right here. There are several pleasent pubs in Elstead but in the interests of pedestrian safety please use the A3 to get to Elstead.

The main car-park at grid reference SU 895404 has an excellent hard surface. There will be traders in the car-park including Ultra-Sport. There will be an entry tent and course information. Toilets will be portaloos, ten of them. Competitors will have to cross the road to the common. Although this will be marshalled please take care crossing the road. There will then be a short walk of about 100m to the start. The finish, the start, clothing dump, and string course will probably all be within about 100m of each other. Please note that the path up to the start is steep and difficult for push-chairs.

According to the current BOF fixture list this is the only Badge event in England on that day. A good area and easy motorway access could attract a large entry from many orienteers living south of Manchester. You are advised to get your entry in early. See entry form.

How these pages were created

The OK Nuts pages, text and graphics, were created using an Acorn A5000 and an Acorn Risc-PC with a StrongArm processor by the organiser, Andrew Trimble. The pages were transfered to the web site by the planner, David Finch.

The software used to create the pages was !Draw and !Photodesk (grapics), !PenDTP and !Edit (HTML files) and checked in Fresco (HTML Viewer). The entries were processed on the Acorn A5000 using Badge v5.0c using PC Emulation and the PC card on the Risc-PC.

Andrew Trimble is a Curriculum Advisor for Information Technology and supports IT for schools in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and can be contacted at:

Any comments about the value of competition information on the web would be much appreciated.
