Burgess Park Race, Tuesday 31 May
** Entries now open **
The second race of the London 2022 Park Race series takes place in Burgess Park on Tuesday 31st May 2022. It is the largest park in Southwark, we’ve never used it before and it’s fantastic for orienteering. The park was created to transform one of Southwark’s most densely populated areas in the wake of the Second World War blitz.
Race Centre
The race HQ is The Kennington. The pub is only four minutes walk from Oval tube station (Northern line). Local bus routes also available. Please check the TFL website before travelling. Kit can be left at the pub while you run (at you own risk).
We will be using SiEntries entry system and so if you have your own SI/SIAC, you do not need to come the The Kennington beforehand if you choose – you can go directly to the Start. However you must come back to the pub to download. Note there is no bag-drop at the Start.

Race Details & Entry
Registration and entry is online only. We will be using SiEntries. All entries, including on the day, will be online. Entries will stay open until 19:25 on the day of the event subject to map availability.
The entry fee is £3 for juniors and students; £5 for senior British Orienteering members*; £7 for others.
*If you are not yet a member, do consider joining or renewing for 2022! Please see our ‘Join Us‘ page for more details.
The races use both SIAC contactless and SI electronic punching. SIAC cards are available to hire for those who do not have their own for £2 (free for juniors). Hire cards to be collected at The Kennington.
You are welcome to participate in pairs or groups. Each entry uses one electronic chip and provides one map, so make as many entries as the number of maps the group will want. We do recommend having your own map as map-reading and navigating is part of the fun! If making a single entry for a group, please put “+1” or “+Runner B name” etc at the end of the surname field in the online entry system so that the club can monitor participation numbers.
Start Times | Between 1800 and 1930 |

Start Location
The Start location is 10 minutes walk from the pub. Please allow sufficient time to get to the Start before the last start time of 19:30.
Courses close at 20:15. Controls will be collected from then.
Punching Start for SI and SIAC.
Controls and Finish will have contactless punching enabled.
These courses are offered:
- Long: approximately 5km
- Short: approximately 2.5km
The Long course involves some crossings of minor roads and is therefore not suitable for under-16’s, unless accompanied by an adult. The Short course has no road crossings and is suitable for all.
Shorts are permitted but may adversely affect micro-route-choice for those less brave or foolhardy.
Map notes
There is a main road through the park which both courses cross twice by an underpass. The following extract (in accordance with ISSprOM 2019-2) is how the underpass is shown. You can cross the road using the underpass in the east/west direction. You can go north/south along either side of the road. You are not allowed to cross the road at road level. It’s very obvious when you get there.
Additional information
All competitors take part at their own risk. Adequate clothing should be worn for the conditions.
Photos may be taken at the event.
Results will be available on the SLOW website shortly after the event.
Helping on the night
This event can’t happen without volunteer effort on the night. If you can lend a hand on the Start, or with collecting controls, it is greatly appreciated – please get in touch with Don. Everyone who helps will be able to run.
