Race Report

The 44th running of the Box Hill Fell Race saw entries once again sell out in record time, with all 275 places snapped up within 25 minutes of being released at noon on Boxing Day 2025. The runners who had secured an entry were greeted with cold but dry conditions and at 11:01 they were off, charging up The Old Military Road path towards Box Hill summit. Although the leading 4 runners did manage to miss an early turning (which the Race Director had thought was sufficiently signposted), these competitors were soon back on track. Zared Arasaretnam-Hale of Brighton & Hove AC managed to build an early lead, reaching the 2nd road crossing almost a minute clear of his nearest rival. Zared cemented this advantage in the 2nd half of the race and ultimately finished in 56:10, 01:24 ahead of 2nd place finisher William Gardner of Belgrave Harriers, with Brighton Phoenix’s Luke Pettit following 10 seconds behind. In the women’s race, Suzy Whatmough of Ranelagh Harriers, making her return to this event after a two-year absence, once again demonstrated the speed and strength which had enabled her to win here in 2024. Having achieved a three-and-a-half-minute lead over Mornington Chasers’ Laura Jacklin by the 2nd road crossing, Suzy pulled further ahead in the race’s closing stages, finishing as first woman in 01:05:19. Laura finished 2nd in 01:11:54 whilst Guildford and Godalming AC’s Emily Relton closed out the top 3 in 01:12:56. This year’s race route was slightly altered from last year’s, with scheduled grazing of the National Trust’s Box Hill cattle meaning the path beneath the Zig Zag Road was off limits. The course was otherwise unchanged from last year and as such Zared’s time of 56:10 qualifies as a new course record on this route. In the 4-to-score Open team competition, 12 teams vied for the title. Headington Road Runners might very well have secured this had they had one more competitor, with their 3 runners finishing within the top 15. As it was, Ranelagh Harriers managed to close their first 4 competitors in 43, achieving a solid win over nearest rivals St George’s Hospital. Ranelagh were also victorious in the 3-to-score women’s competition, with overall female champion Suzy Whatmough followed by teammates Lizzie Broughton in 8th and Sally Minchella in 12th. Thames Hare and Hounds closed their team in 19 to take 2nd, with Clapham Chasers in 3rd.
