Wandle Park Race 2013 Results
The first race of the London orienteering clubs’ 2013 Park Race series was held on a beautiful May evening at Wandle Park in Colliers Wood, south west London.
104 runners competed on a brand new map created for the event. Congratulations to Harold Wyber (CHIG) and Helen Gardner (SLOW) who were the first man and woman respectively. Philippa Martin was the first junior on the short course.
The planner (and organiser and mapper) Don McKerrow did an excellent job packing in a number of surprises over 29 controls around the narrow strip of land consisting of a park and nature reserve stretching along the River Wandle. Many people were caught out by the dead end on the long course approaching control 7. The standard has been set for the rest of the series!
The post-race atmosphere was excellent with many people staying behind to drink, eat and of course compare notes at The Charles Holden pub. Ollie O’Brien finally received the Bonington Trophy for services to mapping, which was announced at the British Orienteering AGM in March.
The second race in the series is at Wandsworth Common on Tuesday 28 May.
