JK Festival
Every Easter GB Orienteering holds a four-day orienteering festival called “The JK” #theJK2024. It moves round the country and this year it was in the Midlands. It was in the East for the Friday Sprint and the Monday relays, and in the West for the forest races, middle and long on Saturday and Sunday. There were 2,500 orienteers running, in age classses from 10 to 90.

National Awards for 2023 are presented at the festival. SLOW was presented with the BOF 2023 Spirit of Inclusion Award.
Relays
On the teams day, SLOW fielded eight teams of three.
Our JK Trophy team came 26th. It was all Scottish teams at the top, with Forth Valley prevailing in a close finish (15 second spread) against two Interlopers teams and Edinburgh University.
Unfortunately we didn’t have a team in the Women’s Trophy. In that race South Yorkshire’s “Queen Bees” justified their top billing, with Edinburgh University and South Yorkshire “Busy Bees” second and third.
In the ultravets race SLOW teams were 4th, 13th and 23rd.
Our junior team was 8th in their race.
Our senior women’s team was 9th in their race.
Our senior men’s team was 14th in their race..
And our mixed ad-hoc team was 32nd.
Individual Days
For the individual days, we congratulate the runs of two members representing the enormous age range for our sport – well run Mike Murray and Jonathan Smith.
Mike won the overall in M80.
Jonathan came second in the M10 race, finding a good balance between speed and accuracy as some others unfortunately mispunched.
Other top results from SLOW members:
In M21E new member Simon Harden was third overall.
In W40 Sarah-Jane Barrable was third in the sprint, and tenth in the overall.
In W65 Diane Leakey was seventh in the sprint and eighth overall.
In M70 Don McKerrow was sixth and Alan Leakey eighth in the sprint.
