Waterloo Parks Race Results

It seems Burgess Park wasn’t the only race this series with temperatures above 30! Let’s see if we get any more. It doesn’t seem to have put many people off though, with over 100 attendees again this evening. I hope you all enjoyed the mix of urban and park orienteering, certainly something slightly different from the other races so far.

Michael Crone bagged his first win, strengthening his series lead a bit more. Still within reach of a few though!

Thanks to Clement and Lea for organising (especially finding a pub that would accommodate on a night with an England game!), everyone who helped and the Tankard for hosting.

Thank you to everyone who came to the race despite the heat. We could see the added challenge on the faces of the finishers as they returned to download their results. Well done to everyone, it was no easy task.

This was the first event we have organised, and we had great fun putting it together.

I hope you enjoyed the courses. I tried to make them as interesting as possible, putting myself in an orienteer’s shoes to create route choices and tricky controls.

Using the constraint of having to cross roads, I designed a 3-in-1 course, with a different theme in each of the three quadrants of the map.

The first section was more park-race focused, with route-choice options and opportunities to optimise legs by cutting across open areas.

In the second section, I tried to add longer legs with a variety of route choices, requiring a bit more concentration to navigate through the smaller streets.

The third and final section was intended to be more of a middle-distance style course, with closely spaced controls that demanded speed, precision, and planning ahead to achieve the best possible time.

A big thank you to all the helpers! And to The Tankard for hosting us (and for the air conditioning).
