Fantasy UK Cup 2006

The following information has been sent to SLOW by BOF for distribution to members. Please support the British Squad by entering this fun competition, which last year was won by SLOW’s very own Pete Huzan! Full details and information of the competition are on the UK Cup homepage. You need to get your entry in by 17th March to start scoring points in the first races.

Support the British Squad by taking part in the Fantasy UK Cup. The British Orienteering Squad support fund offers small grants to athletes with World Class potential who come up with their own plan for self-organised training camps. This fund has in the past helped young orienteers to push themselves further, contributing to the medal-winning success of our current team. In 2005 several potential stars received grants, and applications are currently being considered for 2006. To maintain the ability to help our athletes, the support fund is running the Fantasy UK Cup.

What is the Fantasy UK Cup?

Fantasy UK Cup is an orienteering game in a similar vein to games run in newspapers such as Fantasy Football. You choose a team of 10 orienteers then sit back and let them rack up points for you. At any point during the game you can make transfers if your team isn’t performing as well as you would like, and at the end of the season, the team with the most points wins. But remember – some of the top runners may live abroad or not go to all the races – so use all your knowledge and choose your team wisely. You may find some valuable information in CompassSport. You will be able to follow your team’s progress on the web and in CompassSport. There will also be updates sent out by email after each race.

Why should I enter?

Your £3 entry fee will go towards improving the future of British orienteering. There will also be prizes for the top 3 teams and the top junior. Any donations for prizes will be gratefully accepted.

How do I enter?

Just choose your team in accordance with the rules either enter online or complete the entry form on the UK Cup website. All entrants must send a cheque to the address below made payable to “British Orienteering Squad Support Fund”. If you have any queries please email Graham Gristwood at (NB please do not email entries). Entries will only be recognised on receipt of payment

The list of orienteers can be found at the UK Cup homepage

SLOW success at Interland

Congratulations to SLOW members Ralph Street and Mike Murray for very impressive winning runs in helping England to victory in the annual “Interland” event on Sunday 26 February. This event is a 4-way international competition between England, Germany, Holland and Belgium, and this year was held in Warendorf, near Munster, in Germany.

Ralph won the M17 course, completing the 8.0km course in a very impressive time of 45:00. Mike was also victorious for England, winning the 5.3km M60 course in an equally-impressive 35:21. England were convincing winners of the overall trophy.

Full event results can be found here.

Orienteering fixtures map website

SLOW member Ollie O’Brien has set up a very impressive new website detailing forthcoming orienteering fixtures, which may be of interest to SLOW members (and other orienteers). The site works by entering your postcode, and it then displays – both graphically and in list format – all of your nearest orienteering events over the next 4 weeks. The fixtures are primarily taken from the official BOF fixtures list.

The website can be found here:

NB – details of forthcoming SLOW events and links to other fixtures websites can be found here.

Ralph Street – British Schools Winner

Congratulations to Ralph Street on winning the British Schools Year 10 championships at Temple Newsam, Leeds on 20 November. Representing Tiffin School in Kingston, Ralph won by a cool six seconds.

Brother Greg was 20th in the Year 8 competition in which six other Tiffin School/SLOW members performed very well in a high quality field: Grant Hamilton 40th, Max Camara & Aaron Moran 44th, Nisha Vdayakumar 62nd, Robbie Ashley-Bach 77th and Bhavesh Patel 78th.

New SLOW Kit

We are pleased to announce the launch of the new SLOW orienteering kit. The new kit will be produced by Norwegian manufacturers Trimtex, whose designs will be familiar to any of you who were at the World Cup races in May – they manufacture the current GB squad kit, as well as that of many other international teams. People may have also spotted that a few British clubs (eg Southdowns) have recently started wearing these new kits.

The SLOW kit design. Left: Front. Right: Back.

Pete, Simon and Paul model the Trimtex kit.

The tops are short-sleeve, partly meshed “o-polyester” material. You can see the new club design above along with a photo of Trimtex kit samples being modelled by a few club members at the last committee meeting! (Note that these samples are different colour designs to the new SLOW kit; the blue colour to be used in the actual kit is the same as the royal blue which appears in the centre of the sample kits). Click here to see full picture of new kit.

The cost will be around £30 per top (only £2 more expensive than the existing kit). Our aim is to have the new kits ready to launch at the Compass Sport Cup final on 16 October. (What better way to scare the opposition at the Final than by all turning up in our pristine new club O-kit!). However there is an 8 week delivery time on kits, so we will be placing the order in early August – please let me know by then if you want a top.

We are not intending to order many surplus kits, so if you are likely to want one then please reserve it now in time for our order to Trimtex – otherwise you may have to wait a long time until a subsequent order is made, and it will probably be more expensive too (as smaller orders to Trimtex cost more per kit).

We will only be ordering O-trousers if there is sufficient demand for these as well. Trimtex offer a choice of trousers:

(i) ‘standard’ O-trousers,
(ii) standard with elastic under the knee and with/without sewn in gaiters,
(iii) “Extreme o-pants”, which are knee-high, using o-polyester material. These would be in the same blue colour as the tops. Please let me know if you are interested in ordering any of these O-trousers as well.
We will need a minimum of 5 orders of any type, and it would be quite a bit cheaper if there are over 10. Prices for option (i) are £14-£18 (depending on how many orders we make), and around £20-£25 for options (ii) or (iii). Let me know if you are interested in any of these, and I will confirm in due course whether we will be going ahead with this order.

Before I make the final order for the tops, you will need to let me know what size you need – the choice ranges from XXS to XXXL! The tops are described as ‘body hugging’ and are therefore a bit tighter than current Ultrasport O-tops – you may want to order to a larger size than usual. If you would like to see the samples and try them on to work out your size (I have M, L and XL samples), I will be bringing the sample tops to various training events/Frolics over the 3 weeks, the social evening on Weds 27th July, and also to the Scottish 6-days.

How to order

All you have to do is let me know that you want a top (and/or trousers), and what size you need – either email () or see me at an event over the next 3 weeks or so. Payment can be made when the kits arrive. Let me know if you have any questions about the kit.

PS – there is still a small amount of the current SLOW O-kit in stock, which will continue to be available while stocks last. I am taking over this stock from Teresa Turner, so please contact me directly if you would like to order any of the existing kit.
