New SLOW Kit

We are pleased to announce the launch of the new SLOW orienteering kit. The new kit will be produced by Norwegian manufacturers Trimtex, whose designs will be familiar to any of you who were at the World Cup races in May – they manufacture the current GB squad kit, as well as that of many other international teams. People may have also spotted that a few British clubs (eg Southdowns) have recently started wearing these new kits.

The SLOW kit design. Left: Front. Right: Back.

Pete, Simon and Paul model the Trimtex kit.

The tops are short-sleeve, partly meshed “o-polyester” material. You can see the new club design above along with a photo of Trimtex kit samples being modelled by a few club members at the last committee meeting! (Note that these samples are different colour designs to the new SLOW kit; the blue colour to be used in the actual kit is the same as the royal blue which appears in the centre of the sample kits). Click here to see full picture of new kit.

The cost will be around £30 per top (only £2 more expensive than the existing kit). Our aim is to have the new kits ready to launch at the Compass Sport Cup final on 16 October. (What better way to scare the opposition at the Final than by all turning up in our pristine new club O-kit!). However there is an 8 week delivery time on kits, so we will be placing the order in early August – please let me know by then if you want a top.

We are not intending to order many surplus kits, so if you are likely to want one then please reserve it now in time for our order to Trimtex – otherwise you may have to wait a long time until a subsequent order is made, and it will probably be more expensive too (as smaller orders to Trimtex cost more per kit).

We will only be ordering O-trousers if there is sufficient demand for these as well. Trimtex offer a choice of trousers:

(i) ‘standard’ O-trousers,
(ii) standard with elastic under the knee and with/without sewn in gaiters,
(iii) “Extreme o-pants”, which are knee-high, using o-polyester material. These would be in the same blue colour as the tops. Please let me know if you are interested in ordering any of these O-trousers as well.
We will need a minimum of 5 orders of any type, and it would be quite a bit cheaper if there are over 10. Prices for option (i) are £14-£18 (depending on how many orders we make), and around £20-£25 for options (ii) or (iii). Let me know if you are interested in any of these, and I will confirm in due course whether we will be going ahead with this order.

Before I make the final order for the tops, you will need to let me know what size you need – the choice ranges from XXS to XXXL! The tops are described as ‘body hugging’ and are therefore a bit tighter than current Ultrasport O-tops – you may want to order to a larger size than usual. If you would like to see the samples and try them on to work out your size (I have M, L and XL samples), I will be bringing the sample tops to various training events/Frolics over the 3 weeks, the social evening on Weds 27th July, and also to the Scottish 6-days.

How to order

All you have to do is let me know that you want a top (and/or trousers), and what size you need – either email () or see me at an event over the next 3 weeks or so. Payment can be made when the kits arrive. Let me know if you have any questions about the kit.

PS – there is still a small amount of the current SLOW O-kit in stock, which will continue to be available while stocks last. I am taking over this stock from Teresa Turner, so please contact me directly if you would like to order any of the existing kit.

SLOW success at the SE Relays

Paul Street and Ed Catmur

SLOW members took the trophies in both the Open and Handicap classes at last Sunday’s South East Relays, held in Epping Forest. The event was a real test of heat endurance, as temperatures were up in the thirties and there was limited shade on the courses.

In the open class Charlie Whetham brought us in 3rd on the first leg, less than 3 minutes down on the local leaders CHIG. In the womens’ race, Sarah Brown was also less than 3 minutes down on the leaders SO. On second leg Paul Street pulled the mens’ team up to second place, now less than a minute down on CHIG. Jackie Chapman recorded the fastest female time on the leg to keep the women in strong contention. Ed Catmur anchored the mens’ team home in style to take the title by a whopping eleven minutes, while CHIG mispunched under the pressure. Rachael Holmes was unable to catch the SO women on last leg, so the ladies finished second overall.

Our two handicap relay teams also had a great day – SLOW handclap (Ralph Street, David May and Paul Nixon) won the race by a big margin and SLOW progress (Vince Roper, Don McKerrow and Michael May) finished third. Paul won the Green handicap race by a massive 10 minutes, while Ralph had the third fastest time in the Blue and Michael beat David to get around the Orange in the third fastest time too.

This is a good fun, low-key relay event which caters for all standards and is recommended for next year (especially if we can win again!)

Harvester Relays

Our A team comprised Andy R, Richard C, Ed, Pete, Mike G, Don & Paul N. All of them had ok to excellent runs. After 2 legs we were 6th & we held that till 40 minutes from the end of 8 hours of running when a stronger FVO runner overtook us. But 7th is our best position this millennium!

Our B team comprised Chris F, Jim, Andy, Vicky & Vince. Again there were some good runs. The team was n/c because Andy had already run in the A team. But we would have come 12th out of 28 teams, just 43 minutes down on the leading team. After Chris & Jim had run we were a few minutes ahead of the best handicap team.

The event was very well organised with real-time computer displays of how well the runners were getting round their courses. SLOW had their own part of the campsite so it was easy to find people to meet up.

The Harvester is a unique event in the British orienteering scene & should be experienced! Next year the event is on 10th June in South Scotland. It should be possible to fly up by budget airline for less than £50 and have team transport from the airport. Have a think about that.

Coaching Day Sunday 12th June

You are invited to a coaching day on Sunday 12th June 2005 probably on Wisley Common (subject to land permission) just off the A3 near to the M25 junction. Time 10am to 2pm. Details of car park to follow when land permission confirmed. Terrain is pine forest with a scattering of rhododendron thickets. Technical exercises from white for young juniors, through yellow/orange for beginners and juniors to light green and beyond to stretch developing orienteers will be available.

For those of you who have not been before, you can go round with somebody or talk to the coaching team afterwards. We generally do 2 or 3 exercises in the morning followed by a break for lunch (please bring your own) and socialising. We generally finish with a fun competition so you can practice your skills. Please let Heather Walton know if you will be coming by Friday 3rd June so that I can organise some more experienced orienteers to guide you. Let me know if there are any techniques you particularly want to practice. Any offers from volunteers to help also gratefully received.

Land permission has now been confirmed for the coaching day on Wisley Common. The car park is at grid reference TQ 079583. Coming south down the A3 you need to leave the A3 as if to join the M25 then rejoin the A3 again going south and turn left off the slip road. The car park is not the first one but the second one further down Old Lane. See the link below.

Please let Heather Walton know in advance if you are coming.
