Coaching for beginners and Juniors – 20th Feb 2005

SLOW will be organising a coaching day for beginners and juniors on Sunday 20th February. This is the week before the Compass Sport cup (see Club Captain’s e-mail) so a chance to polish your skills before then. There will be particular emphasis on relocation skills (translation – finding where you are again after you have got lost).

The coaching day is designed for a range of standards from young juniors just starting to exercises to stretch developing juniors and adult inexperienced orienteers (approximately yellow to light green standard and a bit beyond) The exercises can be tailored to match the people who want to come. You can be shadowed by more experienced orienteers or just talk to a coach after each exercise. We will finish by early afternoon with a fun relay. This is a good chance to talk to people about the areas you want to improve. The area is yet to be confirmed – details to follow. Transport can be arranged for those who need it.

Coaching weekend – 4th to 6th March 2005

Are you quivering in your boots because you have heard that the British Championships are on a sand dune area (Penhale Sands in Cornwall) this year? Well, rescue is at hand because SLOW is having a training weekend on sand dune areas in South Wales on the weekend of the 4th/5th/6th March 2005.

We will be training on Broughton Burrows on the Gower Peninsula on Saturday 5th March during the day. These are challenging open coastal sand dunes with a limited number of paths and fences so you will have to learn to use ridges and large depressions as line features. For the real addicts there is the Midland Night Championships at Pembrey Forest on Saturday night or a return to our chalets. Then you will have a chance to try out what you have learnt at a regional event at Pembrey on Sunday. Pembrey is also a sand dune area much of it is forested.

The coaching exercises will be designed for people with a reasonable amount of orienteering experience preferably light green standard or above. It would be suitable for older juniors. But please discuss with Chris Fry or myself if you are keen but unsure – we will do our best to cater for everyone that would like to come. We hope that more experienced orienteers will spend at least part of the day going round with the less experienced but will also get a chance to do some coaching exercises themselves. I have made a provisional booking of some chalets (two for 6 people, one for 8 people) at the LA Holiday and Riding Centre “” near Port Talbot. It would be possible for families to book their own chalets if sharing with the mob does not appeal (there are 13 chalets in all which were still free before Christmas). The cost is £190 per cabin 6 berth or 8 berth for 2 nights with a 3rd night free and a discount is possible if the cabin is not full e.g. £165 per night if only 3 or 4 people.

The chalets are 1 mile from J40 of the M4. Its location was chosen to minimise the length of the drive on Friday night and to allow reasonable proximity to a railway station (Port Talbot). It is about another 30 miles to Broughton Burrows – just over half on motorway, the rest on little roads. Pembrey is also about 30 miles away in a slightly different direction.

I need to know numbers for both land permission for Broughton Burrows (not expected to be a problem) and for the chalets, particularly if the chalets provisionally booked will not be sufficient. I have already had expressions of interest from several people.

Please return the attached form to me, preferably by 31st January to give me an idea of numbers (even if you have to confirm later). Please reply also if you cannot come as that will give a much clearer idea of where we stand with numbers.

Yvette Baker Trophy National Final

SLOW’s Junior Squad, pictured below, at the Yvette Baker Trophy Final at Cannock Chase on 5th December. The Yvette Baker Trophy is the national junior inter-club competition and SLOW qualified for the Final by winning the South-East Regional Final in October. It was a very high standard competition and the SLOW team came 13th, only 5 points off 10th place. Individual highlights were: Ralph Street 1st boy on Light Green and Sara Luescher 2nd girl on Green. Well done to everybody who took part in this prestigious competition.

Yvette Baker Trophy 2004 – Round 1

Last weekend the SLOW junior squad won the regional round of the Yvette Baker Trophy at Bagshot Heath. This is one of the most important orienteering competitions for junior orienteers in England. The team won a close competition with 889 points, ahead of Southowns (886), Guildford (870), Southern Navigators (869), & Mole Valley (283).

Our top scorers were: Sara Luescher (100), James McMillan (100), Anna Steinitz (99), Charles McMillan (99), Chris Wroe (99), Jenny Steinitz (98), Greg Street (98), Michael May (98), & Ian Hiddleston (98). Valuable backup was provided by Guy Hiddleston, Holly Clemens, Alice Clemens, Holly Snelling, & Laura Ashforth. And we had several potential future runners taking part non-competitively being shadowed by their parents.

The Yvette Baker Trophy final is on Sunday 5th December on Cannock Chase, just north of Birmingham. We shall be competing against other junior teams from all over England. The final is suitable for all juniors from the very youngest up to M/W20 of all standards from Yellow through to Green. You run a course based upon your ability (based on whether you have achieved gold standard) rather than your age. Last year we came a brilliant 5th in the final. We will need as strong a turnout as possible this year to try to do as well again. We will travel by hired coach to the event on Sunday morning. The club will subsidise this, so there will be no cost to juniors.

Please let Pete Huzan (SLOW Team Captain) know of your availability for the final as soon as you can by emailing . Please also say if you would like to travel by coach (I hope you all do!). There will also be an opportunity for parents & other supporters to get a run at the event – so all club members are also invited. SLOW will provide extra training opportunities before the final. Details of these will follow soon.

September 2004 News

Congratulations to Ralph Street who won M14 at the recent Junior Home International in the Lake District. Representing England, he beat all his rivals by nearly two minutes. Ralph has recently been invited to join the Start Squad, the junior section of the GB National Orienteering Squad.

Meanwhile over 50 people came to the SLOW Coaching Day on a warm, sunny day on Wimbledon Common. Thirty two athletes, including adventure racers and junior absolute beginners, were aided by over 18 coaches and parents.

Coaching Day Sunday 5th September 2004

Get ready for the new season: next SLOW coaching day is Sunday 5th September on Wimbledon Common (starting point to be confirmed) from 10am to 2pm. Chris Robinson is kindly planning the exercises – so expect something different. And a bit of fun.

This is a good chance to talk to people about the areas you want to improve.

Please let Heather Walton know by 26th August whether you will be coming.Also let Heather or Chris Robinson () know if there are any particular techniques you want to practice or learn. Would the more experienced orienteers let me know if you are available to help, please.

North Downs Relay

Another fine win for our team once again showing our strength in depth and our members’ wilingness to respond at short notice when a crisis arises. Especial mention to a group of runners entirely new to the event:- Simon Evans, Andy Hodgson; Angelika Gerlach, Owen Lindsell and Rachael Holmes. Also to Charlie Whetham who murdered the record, which was quite a good one, on leg 9 from Vigo Inn to Dunton Green.

We had 12 men and 4 ladies out on the day. The average age of our team was probably a lot less than 2004!. For 2005 the event will probably run on 18th or 25th June

SLOW at the South-East Relays


These were very ably staged by CROC on our very own Wimbledon Common. The memorial on the playing fields was a good setting for the handover & spectator control & the weather was good for the whole day. The relay prizegiving was preceded by the individual south-east galoppen presentation, where several SLOW members got certificates for their performances at local age group events last year.

There were only two teams in the junior relay. Charles, Greg & Ralph managed to get round well to win, especially given that the orange course was quite tough.

The rest of the SLOW teams battled it out on the Handicap course, which had the most teams. A Handicap team has three members, running blue, green & orange; each age class has a points value & the combined points value must be below a certain maximum. This gave the team captain lots of fun trying to work out the best combination, especially when he realised someone would not be there with 20 minutes to go before the start. Southdowns won, with SLOW teams taking 2nd (Andy J, Sarah B, Mark V), 3rd (Simon E, Karen J, Paul St), 6th, 13th & 16th places. The top 3 teams were within 3 minutes of each other. It was especially nice to see Jenny C & Justin M running their first relays for the club.
