Pimlico Street-O and Christmas Social

Tim and CJ hosted the Pimlico Street-O on Tuesday and also provided the food and mulled wine for the post-race Christmas social! Results are now up.

All runners were given a Santa hat to run in, with a team badge on it. By swapping the hats with other runners met during the race, competitors could gain an extra thirty points. With around 60 people in Santa hats running around Pimlico, Victoria, Millbank and Belgravia for an hour, our presence on the streets was highly visible!

Get off the road and try something different this summer! The Surrey Hills Races will take you along the footpaths of the Surrey Hills and provide a challenge to trail runners, orienteers and adventure racers alike. Depending upon the course you run you will visit the summits of Leith Hill, Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill – and everyone will run through the beautiful and varied countryside to the south-west of Dorking.

These mass start races REQUIRE NAVIGATION to visit a series of checkpoints along the way. A copy of the courses is available in advance, and scouting your route beforehand (ESSENTIAL) provides a great excuse for some training runs. (Try our guided recce runs – see below.) A purpose-drawn map at 1:25,000 is provided to all competitors, and is available in advance from the Organiser (send 9×6 SAE).


The SPORTident electronic checking system is used. This ensures rapid results processing and provides finishers with a print-out of their times to each checkpoint. All competitors will require an SI card – if you don’t have your own you can hire one on the day.


‘A’ 30km, ‘B’ 16km, ‘C’ 10km. All courses require navigation.

Travel Directions

The start is easily accessible by both car and public transport.

If travelling by car head into Dorking and follow signs to the parking area.

Public transport also provides excellent links to the race, with trains taking an hour from London Waterloo and Victoria and also from Reading. From the station, its a approximately a half an hour stroll to the event centre where there will be bag storage.


Toilets, showers, supervised bag storage.


Trophies are awarded in memory of Byron Davies and Kate Thomas to the winner of the ‘A’ course and to the first lady on the ‘A’ course respectively. The Michael Murray trophy is awarded to the winner of the ‘B’ course. There are also trophies for the ‘C’ course and for the first lady on the ‘B’ course. Also Age Class prizes.

Entry on the Day

Entry on the Day will be available, subject to courses not being filled, at £10 (students/juniors £5). Due to changes in the way the event is being promoted this year, it is advisable to enter in advance, as some or all courses may fill well in advance of race day.

Event uses electronic punching: SI card hire £1.

FRA rules

U-18s may not run Courses ‘A’ or ‘B’. No under-16s accepted. Limit: 100 in each race. Competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety, and are required to sign a disclaimer to this effect on the entry form.

Guided recce runs

Saturday 16 April. Meet at 9.45 a.m. on The Nower recreation area, at westmost junction of Hampstead Lane and West Bank. Cost £2, which will be deducted from the cost of the race entry.

Car parking, registration and changing facilities have again been kindly provided by the Friends Provident Life Office Sports and Social Club. There will be signposts off the A24 one kilometre south of the Burford Bridge roundabout (OS Grid Ref TQ172507). This will entail a walk of about 1.7 km to get to the start/finish area. Public transport to BR station Dorking Deepdene (Guildford to Redhill Line) or Dorking (Epsom to Horsham Line) are a short walk from registration. Westhumble Station (Epsom to Horsham Line) is closer to the start for those who do not require changing facilities. Local bus services generally stop in Dorking Town Centre, about 1km from registration.

The Club’s bar will be open after the race until 2.00pm and will be selling sandwiches as well as drinks. The prize giving will be there around 1.30 pm.


There will be prizes for the leading runners in the usual categories (note that lady veterans have to be over 40) including a team competition with 4 to count.


The National Trust are the land-owners for the vast majority of the course and they have requested two conditions be met in order to avoid erosion of the chalk downland:

  1. THERE IS A LIMIT OF 250 RUNNERS. Note that we expect this limit to be reached well before race day.
  2. RUNNERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR SPIKES. They cause considerable erosion on steep downhill grass. Your co-operation is requested as significant damage could jeopardise future races.

Race numbers will be posted in advance only to those who indicate they want one by sending in an s.a.e. Otherwise numbers can be collected from registration on the day. Please note that under a strict application of FRA rules people under 18 are not allowed to run.

Blood Races: 2 Mass start gaffled races approx. 15km (Full Blood) and 10km (Half Blood) designed to challenge your endurance and technique under the pressure of head-to-head racing. The OK Nuts Trophy is in memory of Mike Wells Cole, former British Champion and a member of Nutfielders OK, who died in 1976; this will be awarded to the winner of the Full Blood race. The Heather Monro Trophy will be awarded to the first woman on the Half Blood race and the Margaret Loveless Trophy for best Junior performance on any course. OK Nuts coasters will be awarded to the best in each BOF age class according to the course table below. There will additional prizes on the Blood races.

South-East League 2010/11

“The South-East League is an annual competition between the member clubs of the SEOA. It runs over each autumn/winter/spring season.

“For this coming season the League is being revamped to try and make things more interesting for clubs who rarely get anywhere near the top of the table. There will be 2 divisions with a new trophy (the CROC Trophy commissioned by DFOK) for the winners of the Second Division, and like football 2 clubs will be relegated and 2 promoted each season. The points differential for clubs at the top of the table has been reduced to make a closer competition.” – SE League Co-ordinator
